Phinisi Charter FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

Comprehensive answers to the most common questions about phinisi charters, pricing, safety, destinations, and booking in Indonesia.

General Questions

What is a phinisi?
A phinisi is a traditional Indonesian two-masted wooden sailing vessel, originally built by the Bugis and Makassar seafarers of South Sulawesi. Today, modern phinisi vessels retain the iconic hull shape and handcrafted wooden construction while incorporating luxury amenities — air-conditioned cabins, en-suite bathrooms, gourmet kitchens, and entertainment systems. They range from 20 to 55+ meters in length and accommodate 6 to 20+ guests.
How is a phinisi charter different from a yacht charter?
A phinisi offers a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern luxury that steel or fiberglass yachts cannot match. The wooden construction creates warmer, more character-filled interiors. Phinisi vessels typically have wider beams (more stable), more outdoor deck space, and a deeper connection to Indonesian maritime heritage. Many travelers choose phinisi over conventional yachts for the authentic cultural experience and the stunning aesthetic of sailing on a handcrafted wooden vessel.

Pricing & Payment

How much does a phinisi charter cost?
Private phinisi charters range from USD 2,500 to USD 25,000+ per night depending on vessel category (Classic, Premium, Superyacht), destination, season, and duration. Open trip shared departures start from USD 450/person for 3 days. All rates are all-inclusive — crew, chef, meals, equipment, and fuel. View full pricing guide.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept international bank transfer (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD), credit card (Visa, Mastercard — 3% surcharge), PayPal, and Wise. A 50% deposit secures your booking with the balance due 30 days before departure. Corporate invoicing and purchase orders are also accommodated.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations 60+ days before departure receive a full refund minus 5% processing fee. 30–59 days prior receives 50% refund. Within 30 days, the deposit is non-refundable but can be applied to a future booking within 12 months. We strongly recommend travel insurance for all charters.
Are there any hidden fees?
No. Our proposals list every cost transparently. Standard inclusions cover crew, chef, meals, water, equipment, and fuel. The only common extras are national park entrance fees (Komodo: ~USD 25/person), alcoholic beverages, scuba diving with instructor, and gratuities (discretionary, 5–10% is customary). These are always disclosed upfront.

Safety & Comfort

Are phinisi charters safe?
Yes. All vessels in our fleet pass a comprehensive safety inspection covering life rafts, fire extinguishers, navigation equipment, communication systems, first-aid supplies, and crew certifications. Vessels sail protected waters between islands and anchor in calm bays overnight. Our captains have decades of experience navigating Indonesian waters. Safety equipment exceeds maritime authority requirements.
Will I get seasick?
Motion sickness is uncommon on phinisi charters. The vessels are wide-beamed and remarkably stable, and routes stay in sheltered waters between islands with minimal open-ocean exposure. The captain anchors in calm bays each night. We carry seasickness medication onboard and can adjust routes to calmer waters if needed.
Do cabins have air conditioning and private bathrooms?
Yes. All Premium and Superyacht vessels have air-conditioned cabins with en-suite bathrooms featuring hot water showers. Classic vessels vary — most have AC in cabins with shared or en-suite facilities. Cabin specifications are detailed in every vessel profile so you know exactly what to expect before booking.
Is there Wi-Fi on board?
Premium and Superyacht vessels offer limited satellite Wi-Fi suitable for messaging and email. Classic vessels generally do not have Wi-Fi. Mobile signal is available near some islands but spotty in remote areas like Raja Ampat. Many guests appreciate the digital detox as part of the experience.

Destinations & Itineraries

Which destination is best for first-time visitors?
Komodo is the most popular first-time destination — closest to Bali (1.5hr flight), excellent infrastructure, dramatic scenery, great snorkeling, and the iconic Komodo dragons. A 3–4 night Komodo charter gives the best introduction to phinisi sailing. Explore Komodo charters.
When is the best time to charter a phinisi?
Indonesia is a year-round destination. Peak season (June–September) offers the best weather across all destinations. Shoulder months (April–May, October–November) provide great conditions with fewer crowds. Low season (December–March) offers the best pricing. Raja Ampat is best October–April. Manta season in Komodo varies by site — see our manta guide.
Can I customize the itinerary?
Absolutely. Every private charter itinerary is fully customizable at no extra charge. Choose your destinations, activities, pace, meal preferences, and special requests. Our charter consultants work with you and the captain to design the perfect route. Even during the voyage, the itinerary can be adjusted based on weather, sea conditions, and your preferences.
How do I get to Labuan Bajo or Sorong?
Labuan Bajo (Komodo): Direct flights from Bali (1.5hrs), Jakarta (2.5hrs), and several other Indonesian cities. Multiple daily flights available. Sorong (Raja Ampat): Flights from Jakarta (4.5hrs) or Makassar (3hrs) with connections. We coordinate all airport transfers and can assist with flight booking.

Activities & Experiences

Do I need diving certification?
No certification is needed for snorkeling, which provides amazing marine encounters at every destination. For scuba diving, minimum PADI Open Water or equivalent is required. Advanced Open Water courses can be completed onboard during your trip. Non-divers enjoy world-class snorkeling, kayaking, and island activities.
What activities are available besides diving and snorkeling?
Activities include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, island trekking, beach exploration, Komodo dragon viewing, sunset photography, stargazing, cooking classes with the chef, and water sports (jet ski on Superyacht vessels). Wellness options include yoga, meditation, and spa treatments. Every day offers new adventures.
Can you accommodate dietary requirements?
Yes. Our private chefs fully accommodate all dietary needs — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher, nut-free, and any other restrictions or preferences. Share your requirements during pre-trip planning and the chef sources appropriate ingredients. Special occasion cakes and menus are also arranged.

Booking Process

How far in advance should I book?
Peak season (June–September): 3–6 months ahead. Shoulder season: 1–3 months. Low season: 2–4 weeks is often sufficient. Popular vessels and holiday periods (Christmas, New Year, Chinese New Year) book out very early. Contact us to check availability for your dates.
What happens after I inquire?
After your inquiry, a dedicated charter consultant contacts you within 2 hours to understand your preferences. Within 48 hours, you receive a personalized proposal with vessel options, detailed itinerary, pricing breakdown, and crew profiles. Once you confirm, a 50% deposit secures your booking. Pre-trip concierge planning begins immediately — handling logistics, dietary preferences, and special requests.
