Manta Ray Season in Komodo

Swim alongside the ocean’s gentle giants — oceanic manta rays with wingspans up to seven meters — in the nutrient-rich waters of Komodo National Park. A phinisi charter delivers you to the best manta sites at peak season.

When Is Manta Season in Komodo?

Manta rays are present in Komodo National Park year-round, but the prime manta season runs from June through October. During these months, nutrient-rich upwellings from the deep channels between islands attract massive concentrations of plankton, which in turn draw large aggregations of manta rays to predictable feeding and cleaning stations. Peak encounters occur in July and August, when groups of 20 or more mantas are regularly observed at a single site.

Outside peak season, mantas remain present but in smaller numbers. December through March (wet season) offers occasional encounters, particularly at cleaning stations where mantas visit to have parasites removed by cleaner wrasse. A private phinisi charter gives you the flexibility to spend extended time at manta sites, maximizing your chances regardless of season.

Best Manta Ray Sites in Komodo

Manta Point (Makassar Reef)

The most famous manta site in Komodo National Park. This shallow reef acts as a cleaning station where mantas queue to have parasites removed. During peak season, divers and snorkelers regularly encounter 10-30 mantas circling the station. The site is accessible to snorkelers (depth 3-8 meters at the cleaning station) and divers alike. Current can be moderate, so your phinisi anchors in the sheltered lee while tender boats position you optimally.

Karang Makassar

A submerged reef system where oceanic mantas come to feed on plankton aggregations. The mantas here tend to be larger than at Manta Point — wingspans of 4-7 meters are common. This is a surface-feeding site, making it exceptional for snorkeling encounters where mantas glide directly beneath you, mouths open wide, filtering the plankton-rich water.

Mawan Island

A less-visited cleaning station on the southern side of Komodo. Fewer boats mean more intimate encounters, often with just your group and the mantas. The surrounding reef is also excellent for general diving with turtles, reef sharks, and abundant coral formations. Your phinisi captain can time visits to coincide with incoming tides that bring the mantas to the station.

Manta Species in Komodo

Komodo hosts two manta species. The reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) is the more commonly encountered species at cleaning stations, with wingspans typically 3-4 meters. The giant oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) visits during plankton blooms and can reach wingspans of 7 meters — an encounter with one of these magnificent creatures is genuinely life-changing. Both species are classified as Vulnerable by IUCN, making responsible tourism practices essential.

What to Expect During a Manta Encounter

Encounters typically begin from snorkel or scuba position. Your guide spots manta activity from the tender boat, briefs the group on entry protocol, and positions you in the mantas’ path. Mantas are curious and often approach divers and snorkelers closely — maintaining a calm, still position in the water is far more effective than chasing. Sessions last 30-60 minutes depending on manta activity, water temperature, and current conditions.

Ethical Guidelines for Swimming with Mantas

Phinisi Charter follows strict manta interaction protocols aligned with Komodo National Park regulations and the Manta Trust conservation guidelines:

  • Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters — let mantas approach you
  • Never touch, chase, or block a manta’s swimming path
  • No flash photography — strobes can startle feeding mantas
  • Enter water quietly, away from manta activity, then position calmly
  • Maximum 10 swimmers per manta group to prevent overcrowding
  • Your guide monitors interactions and signals when to exit the water

Underwater Photography Tips for Manta Encounters

Manta rays are among the most photogenic marine creatures. For the best results, use a wide-angle lens (10-17mm fisheye ideal) to capture the full wingspan. Position yourself below the mantas and shoot upward against the sunlit surface for dramatic silhouette shots. At cleaning stations, mantas hover nearly motionless — use slower shutter speeds for sharp detail. GoPro users should use the widest field of view and get as close as ethical guidelines allow. Our photography-focused charters include underwater guides who help position you for optimal shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need diving certification to see mantas?

No. Many of the best manta encounters happen while snorkeling, as mantas feed and clean in shallow water (3-8 meters). Snorkelers often have better vantage points than divers since mantas feed near the surface. Non-swimmers can observe from the tender boat.

What if there are no mantas on my trip?

While we cannot guarantee wild animal encounters, our experienced captains know every manta site and optimal tidal conditions. During peak season (June-August), the encounter rate exceeds 95%. If mantas are absent at one site, we immediately reposition to alternatives.

Are manta encounters safe?

Mantas are gentle filter feeders with no teeth or stingers. They are completely harmless to humans and are often curious about divers. The only risk is from strong currents at some sites, which our guides assess before every session. Life jackets and flotation aids are always available.

Can children participate in manta encounters?

Children aged 8+ who are comfortable swimming can snorkel with mantas under close supervision. Younger children can watch from the tender boat. Our crew provides child-sized snorkel equipment and one-on-one water supervision for young snorkelers.

How do I get to Labuan Bajo for a manta charter?

Labuan Bajo is served by daily flights from Bali (1.5 hours), Jakarta (2.5 hours), and several other Indonesian cities. We arrange airport transfers directly to your phinisi at the harbor. Contact us for flight recommendations.
